Lucerne is one of the most valuable forage plants in arable forage production. Their high crude protein content, beneficial structural properties and suitability for use over several years make them particularly attractive for dairy and forage farms. At the same time, lucerne places high demands on harvesting technology. Harvesting in a way that minimises damage to the leaves is the key to successful lucerne cultivation. The aim is to preserve as much of the delicate leaf mass as possible in the crops.
Characteristics of the crops
The particular value of lucerne lies above all in its leafy structure. The leaves provide the bulk of the high-quality crude protein, essential minerals and readily available energy – making lucerne a particularly valuable feedstuff.
It is precisely these nutrient-rich components which deserve special attention. This is because the delicate leaves are highly sensitive to mechanical stress. A gentle, optimally tailored harvesting technology is therefore crucial: it minimises crumb loss and ensures the forage retains its full quality. This way, the energy stays where it belongs – in your animals’ forage.
As the dry matter content of the crops increases, so too does the challenge of preserving the valuable leaf mass. This is because the drier the leaves are, the more easily they detach from the plant and are lost as crumbly residue in the field – a direct loss of quality and energy.
The swathing process is therefore particularly crucial. Every detail counts here, particularly when dealing with wilted or dry crops: A precise and gentle approach is key to preserving the delicate leaf structures. Choosing the correct swathing technique plays a key role in this – it has a significant impact on how many of the valuable nutrients ultimately end up in the forage.
Gentle swathing: In order to preserve the leaf mass – and therefore the forage value and quality of the lucerne crops – the entire swathing process, from pick-up to placement in the swath, must be carried out with the utmost care. As conditions may vary depending on the moisture content of the crops, maximum adaptability is required.
Cleanliness: The same applies to lucerne: Cleanliness is a key factor in quality. Soiling has a direct negative impact on the forage value and should therefore be avoided. Precise height control, optimum ground adaptation and the ability to adapt flexibly to different ground conditions are therefore essential. This is the only way to ensure that the crops remain clean, valuable and of the highest quality.
Flexible swathing: To ensure optimum forage quality, the swathing must be flexibly adapted to the degree of dryness of the crops and the requirements of the downstream machine. This results in uniform swaths – the basis for low-loss and efficient further processing.
Gentle right through to the swath: With the KRONE Swativo, gentle harvesting and maximum forage quality are a given. Thanks to a consistently optimised crop flow – from gentle pick-up right through to precise swathing – the valuable leaf mass is preserved as effectively as possible. Flexibly adjustable components can be adapted to different dry matter contents and varying harvesting conditions. This ensures that the machine operates under optimal conditions at all times and consistently delivers the highest quality forage – efficiently, reliably and in line with practical requirements.
Clean right through to the swath: With the KRONE Swativo, your crops remain clean and of the highest quality at all times. Precise height control and excellent ground adaptation minimise soiling. Thanks to its high adaptability, it copes effortlessly with a wide variety of ground conditions – ensuring clean, valuable forage and the best possible feeding results.
Flexible swathing: With the KRONE Swativo, swathing adapts perfectly to any situation. Thanks to the mobile pick-up units, various placement modes are available, allowing the optimum swath to be formed for every harvester

- EasyFlow Pick-Up – uncontrolled, less wear, low maintenance
- FlexFlow Rotor – active and even conveyance of the crops from the pick-up to the belt
- Standard crop press roller unit – Optimal crop guidance, hydraulically relieved
The coordinated interaction of the OptiSwath system, EasyFlow pick-up, FlexFlow feed rotor, crop press roller unit and conveyor belt ensures that the crops are fed evenly across the entire working width. The individual component groups handle the pick-up, transfer and conveyance of the crops in a controlled and coordinated manner. This results in uniform swaths with a consistent flow of material and minimal mechanical stress on the crops.
OptiSwath combines perfectly coordinated components to ensure a consistent crop flow and high-quality swathing using the KRONE Swativo. From the gentle pick-up by the EasyFlow pick-up, through the active conveyance by the FlexFlow rotor, to the even placement on the ground, every step in the process contributes to excellent swath formation, top-quality forage and optimum utilisation of the downstream harvesting machines.
The Swativo T 1040 Pro features the tried-and-tested EasyFlow pick-up. The specially shaped, slow-moving tines, together with five rows of tines, ensure that the crops are picked up particularly gently and cleanly – even at high driving speeds. Thanks to its uncontrolled design, the pick-up requires very little maintenance and suffers minimal wear and tear, thereby offering maximum reliability, particularly during short harvest windows.
Behind the EasyFlow pick-up, the unique FlexFlow feed rotor reliably picks up the crops and actively feeds them onto the 1,200 mm wide conveyor belt. This active transfer ensures a continuous flow of material from the pick-up area to the conveyor belt and prevents the crops from being pushed up or becoming jammed behind the pick-up. The result is an even and uniform swath formation.
The standard crop press roller unit with downstream deflector sheets is positioned above the crop flow and in the transfer area between the pick-up and the feed rotor. It stabilises the crops immediately after pick-up and guides them in a controlled manner towards the conveyor belt. This prevents the crop from piling up or becoming jammed, thereby ensuring a steady flow of material and promoting the formation of uniform swaths.
Different harvesting conditions require the contact pressure of the crop press roller unit to be adjusted accordingly. Thanks to the integrated hydraulic relief, the crop press roller unit can be easily and directly adjusted to the relevant operating conditions from inside the cabin. The crop press roller unit feeds the crops evenly and ensures a continuous crop flow – even at high harvest volumes. At the same time, the delicate leaf structure is protected and the swath quality is improved.
- Wide-area ground scanning – two large-diameter guide rollers per pick-up unit
- Precise tine guidance – Ground scanning close to the pick-up
- Split pick-up segments – precise adaptation to ground contours
- Uniform bearing pressure – hydromechanical relief of the pick-up units
- Smooth crop pick-up and a quiet material flow
The combination of roll guidance, a split pick-up design and hydraulic and mechanical relief ensures precise ground adaptation across the entire working width. This ensures that the pick-up units follow the contours of the ground smoothly, while protecting the sward and the crops. This ensures clean crop pick-up with a steady flow of material – even in varying ground conditions.
Each swathing unit scans the ground using two large, rubber-coated guide rollers which, with a running surface of over one metre, cover around 50 % of the working width and ensure stable ground tracking. The wide contact area ensures optimum weight distribution and precise guidance of the pick-up tines, even on uneven ground. The rubber coating prevents debris from sticking to the guide rollers and ensures proper functioning. The pick-up technology therefore adapts precisely to the movements of the ground, enabling clean, low-loss crop pick-up and preventing the tines from accidentally penetrating the ground.
The Swativo’s swathing units set new standards in terms of ground adaptation. The pick-up of a unit, with a pick-up width of 4.20 m, consists of two 2-metre pick-up segments. These are connected to each other in a flexible manner and adapt precisely to every contour of the ground. The tried-and-tested OctoLink finger coupling enables a positive-lock drive – regardless of the relative position of the two pick-up segments. The result: thorough raking, no losses and an undamaged sward.
The swathing units are fitted as standard with an active hydraulic relief system,; this allows their bearing pressure to be conveniently adjusted from the cabin. This allows the machine to be precisely adapted to different operating and ground conditions as well as to the requirements of forage harvesting. The active control system maintains the set bearing pressure at a constant level, even when units are moving as a result of ground adaptation.
In addition to the hydraulic relief for the entire unit, an additional mechanical relief system for the pick-up, featuring robust springs, ensures particularly precise ground tracking. This enables the pick-up to adapt quickly and reliably to even minor unevenness in the ground.
Optimal ground adaptation ensures that the crops are picked up cleanly while also protecting the sward under all operating conditions. Ground adaptation forms the basis for high-quality forage in the current cut and in all subsequent cuts. The combination of a split pick-up, large-diameter guide rolls and hydromechanical relief highlights the central importance of the Swativo’s ground-adaptation, ensuring precise contour tracking, protection of the crops and gentle crop pick-up. Swativo – because perfect ground adaptation makes all the difference.
- High throughput – 1,200 mm wide conveyor belt
- Uniform material transport – cleated conveyor belt
- Uniform swath structure – smooth transfer from the FlexFlow rotor to the belt
- Reliable belt drive – hydraulic drive via large-diameter deflection rolls
- Flexible belt speed – can be adapted to driving speed and operating conditions
The coordinated interaction of the conveyor belt, FlexFlow rotor and belt drive ensures a consistent flow of material across the entire working width. Continuous conveyance ensures that swaths are deposited evenly, even with high harvest volumes and under varying operating conditions.
With the Swativo, the crop is not only picked up but also conveyed with particular care. The 1,200 mm-wide conveyor belts are fed evenly by the upstream FlexFlow rotor and reliably convey even large harvest volumes without interruption. The crops are transported continuously – without backing up, forming piles or irregularities in the swath.
Constant, even conveyance is crucial for achieving an optimally shaped swath. The specially cleated conveyor belts prevent them from slipping under the crops and ensure that the crops are reliably conveyed towards the swath. Thanks to the steep angle of inclination, the crops fall almost vertically from the FlexFlow rotor onto the belt, thereby preventing clumping, tangling and uneven swaths. The result is a uniform, loosely deposited swath which is ideal for further processing and ensures the best forage quality.
The cross-conveyor belts are hydraulically driven as standard. This drive concept enhances user-friendliness and offers a high degree of flexibility in day-to-day use. Large-diameter deflection rolls ensure reliable belt guidance and the required belt tension. The large roll diameter provides an increased contact area between the roll and the belt. This ensures excellent grip and prevents slippage, even with high harvest volumes.
The hydraulic drive allows the belt speed to be adjusted flexibly and continuously to suit the prevailing operating conditions directly via the operating terminal in the cabin – precisely and conveniently. If automatic speed control has been activated, it automatically adjusts the belt speed to match the tractor’s current driving speed. This ensures that the machine always operates within the optimum range and guarantees consistent and reliable conveyance of the crops without the need for manual intervention.
The Swativo comes as standard with a collection function which enables precise and flexible operation. In doing so, the cross conveyor belt is switched off while the pick-up and feed rotor continue to convey the crops, allowing the corners of the field to be neatly swathed or specific areas to be cleared. The integrated unloading function then ensures that the belts start up in a controlled manner and that the swath is deposited evenly and cleanly without forming piles.
The standard automatic belt stop system ensures an optimal swath shape along the entire length. When the swath unit is raised at the headland, the cross conveyor belts switch off automatically; when it is lowered, they restart in a controlled and delayed manner. This ensures that the crops are deposited evenly and prevents the formation of piles. The result is neat swath starts and precise swath ends, ideal for further processing.
The telescopic units and flexible directions of travel of the belt allow for a variety of swath patterns – tailored to the harvesting strategy and the trailing machine.
If the belt units have been set to move apart and then come together, a centre swath is formed. The swath width can be adjusted variably between 1 m and 2 m. This allows swaths to be tailored specifically to the harvesting technology used downstream – for example for high-performance forage harvesters or large square balers.
If the belt units are moved together and set to run in the same direction, a side swath is formed. Discharge can be either to the left or to the right. This discharge mode significantly increases flexibility in the field. For example, by joining two working widths together, it is possible to combine just under 20 m into a single swath. This means that even when crop yields are low, high-performance harvesters can be utilised to their full potential.
In the event of high harvest volumes or when forming night swaths, the material can be distributed across two separate swaths using twin swathing. This reduces the swath volume per discharge. The flexible belt control allows for various combinations of discharge direction.
- Hydraulic drive for the swathing units – Supplied by the machine’s on-board hydraulic system
- PTO drive for the hydraulic pumps – 1 3/8" Z = 6, 1000 rpm
- Individually adjustable speed ratios – pick-up, FlexFlow rotor and conveyor belt can be adjusted in a coordinated manner
- Variable belt speed – adjusted manually or automatically to the driving speed
- Temperature-stable power output – integrated oil cooling for consistent system performance
The drive system combines a PTO drive and on-board hydraulic system to form a coordinated unit. Rotational speeds and feed rates can be adjusted to suit different harvesting conditions and ensure a consistent flow of material across the entire working width.
The Swativo T 1040 Pro features a powerful hydraulic drive system which supplies all the components involved in swathing. The pick-up, feed rotor and conveyor belts are supplied with oil directly via the machine’s own on-board hydraulic system. The hydraulic tank fitted to the machine ensures that a sufficient supply of oil is available at all times, thereby guaranteeing consistent, stable drive power – even under demanding operating conditions. An integrated oil cooler also protects the system from overheating and prevents a drop in power during long working days or in high temperatures. This drive concept enables the driver to adjust the components independently and optimally to the harvesting conditions without having to make any compromises. All other functions, such as relief, width adjustment and folding, are controlled via the tractor’s Load Sensing system.
The hydraulic pumps are driven by the tractor’s PTO shaft. To ensure the crop is picked up cleanly, the pick-up speed can be precisely adjusted to suit the harvesting conditions by setting the PTO shaft speed. In relation to this, the rotor speed can be easily adjusted via the operating terminal. Thanks to a generous adjustment range of 85% to 115% relative to the pick-up speed, the rotor can be adjusted precisely so that the crops are always transferred to the conveyor belt in an optimal and even manner. The conveyor belt itself can be adjusted independently of the PTO speed. Its speed can be adjusted as required, either manually via the terminal or automatically depending on the driving speed. This allows all the units involved in active swathing to be optimally adapted to the harvesting conditions. The result: maximum flexibility, perfect material transfer and reliable and clean swathing at all times
- High manoeuvrability – mechanical forced steering with a large steering angle
- Tracking stability – active guidance behind the tractor
- Reduced turning circle – high manoeuvrability in confined spaces
- Controlled steering – precise tracking performance, even in narrow field entrances
The mechanical forced steering system ensures precise tracking of the machine, even when negotiating tight bends and on irregular field shapes. The large steering angle improves manoeuvrability in confined spaces and ensures controlled machine guidance across the entire working width.
The Swativo T 1040 PRO features mechanical forced steering system. The steered axle actively follows the tractor’s track and ensures precise steering behaviour even when negotiating tight bends or swathing in corners. The large steering angle significantly reduces the turning circle and improves manoeuvrability in small or irregularly shaped areas. This ensures that the machine remains highly manoeuvrable even at its full working width of 10.4 m.
- Flexible tractor connection – Cat. II / III hitch
- Smooth machine guidance – a low-level traction point and a pendulum-type connection
- Controlled road driving – compressed air brake system and sturdy running gear
- Quick change to transport position – hydraulic folding of the working units
- Spring-loaded brake cylinder – for driving and parking the machine safely
The optimised hitch, in conjunction with the running gear, brake system and folding kinematics, ensures stable machine guidance in the field as well as safe road transport. The compact transport position makes it easier to move between fields and ensures the machine is highly practical for everyday use.
The Swativo T 1040 Pro features a robust Category II/III two-point headstock. Its pendulum-type connection to the main frame via a ball joint eye and roll ensures sufficient freedom of movement, allowing both the tractor and the machine to follow the contours of the ground without placing any strain on the pivot point. The large steering angle of the headstock gives the machine maximum manoeuvrability.
The main frame, combined with the robust running gear, forms the basis for maximum stability during day-to-day harvesting operations. Both components are specifically designed to ensure a smooth, obstruction-free passage even with high harvest volumes – without compromising on the quality of the work. The result: smooth running, high durability and the ideal requirements for working efficiently under all conditions.
To change fields quickly, the Swativo T 1040 Pro can be effortlessly folded from the working position to the transport position – and back again – at the touch of a button. The whole process is carried out quickly and conveniently from inside the cabin. An integrated sequence control ensures maximum safety: It monitors the folding process and prevents operating errors. This saves valuable time, increases operational reliability and ensures a smooth workflow – from the first field to the last.
As soon as an audible signal and a clear visual indication on the terminal confirm that the transport position has been reached, the Swativo T 1040 Pro is immediately ready for the road. With transport dimensions of less than three metres in width and less than four metres in height, the machine meets the requirements for safe and straightforward transport. A reliable transport interlock also ensures maximum safety and prevents the machine from unintentionally folding down.
- Central machine control from the cabin – full ISOBUS operation
- Individual pre-settings can be saved – Crop profiles
- Automated headland control – Section Control
- Neat swath finish – Automatic belt stop
- Targeted work in corners – Collection function
The control concept, profile management and automated functions are all integrated and support a structured workflow. Settings can be retrieved consistently, functions carried out automatically and work processes managed efficiently – with reduced operating effort.
Operation of the Swadro T 1040 Pro stands for clarity and convenience. This applies to the use of the tractor's own ISOBUS terminal and, in particular, to the optionally available DS 500, CCI 800 or CCI 1200 ISOBUS terminals which can be used to adjust the entire machine via just two operating levels to achieve perfect swaths. To ensure comfortable operation and precise working, the terminal can be combined, on request, with an ISOBUS-compatible AUX joystick CCI A3 which enables even more comfortable and fatigue-free operation.
For certain driving strategies, it is necessary to adapt the direction of travel of the belt or even the bale discharge mode at regular intervals. These adaptations can be made easily via the terminal. For example, with just the press of a button, you can quickly and easily switch from bale discharge on the left side to bale discharge on the right side. Practical hold-to-run functions are available for changing the bale discharge mode. These enable both the position of the pick-up units and the direction of travel of the belt to be adjusted automatically and reliably to the desired operating mode.
Four crop profiles are available to suit different operating conditions:
- Dry
- Moist
- Delicate
- Personal profile
The first three profiles contain factory settings. If one of these profiles is selected, the machine applies the corresponding parameters. This makes it easier to adapt to the crop in question and ensures a quick basic setting, particularly when conditions change. The saved values can be individually adjusted. In your personal profile, you can save your own settings and access them at the touch of a button whenever you need to.
Using the part-width Section Control, the swathing units are automatically lifted and lowered again individually. Thanks to the fully automatic control via GPS position, multiple processing or overrunning can be avoided, for example, when swathing wedge-shaped cut areas or at the headland. This relieves the driver and therefore increases the acreage output thanks to shorter turning times at the headland.
Maintenance points such as drive elements, lubrication points and hydraulic components are positioned so that they are easily accessible. The clear structure of the assemblies ensures that servicing times are kept short and facilitates regular inspection.
A powerful lighting system ensures safe working at dawn or in the evening. Illumination in the working areas makes it easier to monitor the crop flow and the swath pattern, even in low-light conditions.
